HISTORY

The UK has achieved so much in Breakin'; in the Sports, Arts and Community sectors.

We want to celebrate what has been achieved, please get in touch if you would like to contribute to this page.

Members put forward their knowledge of the UK Breakin' crews throughout the year. But we want your help to shape this further;

  • Is there anyone missing?
  • Is there incorrect information?

Wales

Breakin' has taken place in Wales since 1981. Newport was a hotspot from 1983 with Breakers travelling from all over Wales to break at the roller rink, stay over night and travel to Cardiff to Spillers Records to pick up unlabelled vinyl the next day.

There have been many different jams in Wales including Welsh Champs, Breakin' in the Bay and now most recently Hydro Jam which is the world most climate friendly Jam.

Bournemouth

You cannot learn about breakin' in the UK without gaining knowledge on who Second to None are. Second to None are a Bournemouth based crew who kept Breakin' alive by developing breakin' in the late 80's and early 90's when it was a less popular activity and they were the inspirations to many, to start to challenge themselves to learn breakin' when its popularity started to grow in the 2000's. Many Breakers were especially inspired by Second to None's Powermoves.

"Using rare footage of the underground European Hip Hop jams of the late 80's and early 90's 'The BBoy Mercenaries' is a feature length documentary about how how Bournemouth based crew 'Second to None' helped keep Breakin' from going extinct through exchanging VHS tapes of their seminal battle and game changing practice footage with pockets of survivors dotted around the world in a time before the internet."

DJing

Hip Hop started in America, a famous date to note is the 11th of August 1973 when DJ Kool Herc extended the dance beats when using two turn tables at a party 1520 Sedgwick Avenue New York. Many think of this moment as the birth of Hip Hop. DJing has always had an important role in Breakin'.

UK DJ's have achieve alot through the years, many started out as Breakers themselves. Check out the Fly Fidelity Podcast on Welsh DJ's:
